Early Childhood Screening

Early Childhood Screening or The Preschool Screening is a brief, simple procedure used to identify potential health, developmental, or social-emotional problems in infants and young children in the context of family, community, and culture who may need a health assessment, diagnostic assessment, or educational evaluation. The state of Minnesota requires that every child complete Early Childhood Screening. This is a FREE service and is provided for all 3 to 4 year old Minnesota children by their local school district. The screening process provides an opportunity for young children and their families to access a wide variety of services and early childhood programs. It also promotes and supports parents’ understanding of their child’s health, development, and learning.

The screening process checks:

  • Vision and hearing
  • Height and weight
  • Large and small muscles
  • Immunization status
  • Thinking, language, and communication skills
  • Social and emotional development
