Developmental Milestones

Here’s an overview of what to expect children to do between birth and age five. If you have questions about your child’s development call for a free evaluation. These milestones are based on the Hawaii Early Learning Profile (HELP)

3 Months

  • Hands are open
  • Looks at fingers & watches hands
  • Begins to calm him/herself
  • Babbles or coes
  • Follows people and objects
  • Sits with support

6 Months

  • Watches adult’s faces
  • Shows pleasure/displeasure by his/her voice
  • Stops crying when you talk to him/her – rather than when you pick him/her up
  • Babbles double consonants (baba, dada)
  • While on tummy pushes up on one hand
  • Enjoys playing Peek-A-Boo
  • Plays with rattle
  • Rolls from stomach to back

9 Months

  • Crawls
  • Finds hidden objects
  • Looks and vocalizes to own name
  • Waves and responds to bye-bye
  • Imitates actions
  • Feeds self cracker and food

12 Months

  • Understands “no no”
  • Enjoys looking at pictures in books
  • Shows that he/she knows what words mean by his/her actions
  • Builds two block tower
  • Uses 1-4 words
  • Drinks from a cup
  • Stands by self

18 Months

  • Enjoys imitating adult actions
  • Makes at least 4 consonant sounds
  • Plays ball by throwing it back
  • Brings objects from another room, when asked
  • Knows and tells one body part
  • Know and points to 4 animal pictures
  • Talks about something while pointing to it
  • Names 1 or 2 familiar objects

2 Years

  • Uses 2-3 word sentences
  • Favorite words are “no” & “mine”
  • Matches sounds to pictures of animals
  • Assembles 4 nesting cups
  • Identifies 6 body parts
  • Turns pages of book one at a time
  • Sings phrases of song actions
  • Engages in simple make believe -feeds doll, uses phone

2 ½ Years

  • Listens to stories
  • Understands concept of one
  • Matches circle, triangle & square
  • Matches primary colors
  • Says at least one preposition (ex. In/out)
  • Refers to self using a pronoun
  • Dramatizes using a doll
  • Says “no” but does what is asked
  • Names 5 pictures
  • Says 50 words

3 Years

  • Sorts colors & points to color word spoken
  • Completes 3-4 piece puzzle
  • Knows name, age & sex
  • Asks what, where & when questions
  • Tells what has happened using sentences
  • Stacks rings in correct order
  • Points to larger and smaller objects
  • Is proud to do things alone; resists help
  • Begins to obey & follow simple rules

4 Years

  • Uses words like can’t and won’t in sentences
  • Points to common objects according to their uses
  • Describes action in a picture
  • Tells of missing parts of a picture story book/song which has been heard many times
  • Does what he/she is told independently
  • Cleans up spill without reminders
  • Waits at least two times for a turn
  • Shows concern for others; ability to empathize
  • Identifies words that rhyme

5 Years

  • Selects an items based on appearance, category, & function
  • Names classes/categories of sorted objects
  • Places 4 pictures in a sequence and tells story
  • States characteristics and attributes of a place (ex. That elephant is bit, it is dark outside.)
  • Stays with the group and refrains from following unknown people
  • Accepts an altered routine when requested
  • Tells first & last names of father and mother
  • Stays on topic during conversation
  • Follows defined rules whether an authority figure is present or not
  • Draws recognizable face with eyes, nose & mouth
